Maintenance Culture Matters

Abstract

Chris and Fred discuss how important maintenance culture is – especially when it comes to safety-critical systems. Like ‘cable cars’ used to transport people up ski slopes. But unfortunately (like the recent accident that occurred in Italy that resulted in 14 deaths) toxic maintenance culture can lead to disastrous consequences. And this tends to happen across the world on a regular basis. Why does this happen?

Understanding Asset Hierarchy with Shon Isenhour and Brandon Weil

Asset hierarchy is very important to utilize the limited resources of an organization in the best way possible. It helps manage time and cost by prioritizing our assets. That’s why every organization needs to have a hierarchy. There are a lot of standards out there to help you build an asset hierarchy. ISO 14224 helps greatly in the matter. It contains guidelines that a maintenance and reliability organization can use to define some sort of organized processes and procedures that are important to have in the facilities. When they have laid out a foundation that way, it gets easier to do all sorts of things.

In this episode, we covered:

  • What is Asset Hierarchy?
  • Why is the asset hierarchy needed?
  • How should an asset hierarchy be organized?
  • How to develop an asset hierarchy?
  • And much more!

The Importance of Communications with Dan Anderson

When it comes to improving your reliability and maintenance programs, communication is the key to successful implementation of any sustainable business initiative. The new business processes are always complicated to understand and when you don’t make clear job plans for them, it becomes very difficult to get everyone on the same page. There are a lot of problems arise because the plan was either not clearly communicated to the team or scheduling technique wasn’t known to everyone. All of these aspects lead to failures because people aren’t aware of certain things they should have complete information about.

Women In Reliability and Asset Management (WiRAM) with Maura Abad

The presence of women in different industries is a growing fact that cannot be denied. They are now involved in fields—from management to engineering—that were considered solely to be men’s and they are doing these jobs incredibly and competently. There are a very few platforms that emphasize on empowering the women and providing them with content that they need to get better at their jobs and be a valuable asset to the organizations they work for. Still, there is a large number of women who are making transitions to more technical jobs and WiRAM is one of those platforms where women can get the educational content and training they need to handle the asset management work and get ahead in the reliability and maintenance industry.

What Makes a Good Consultant with Fred Schenkelberg

In this episode, the guest Fred Schenkelberg explains what is a good consultant? Whenever comes the question of performance in an organization—performance of assets—there is always a consultant involved who is helping you make your organization better at what you do. So what is a consultant? The consultants are mainly categorized into three major types. There are contractors who help you set things in motion or strategists who make strategic decisions for you. Then there are facilitators or internal ones who you hire for specific projects so that they can assist you just like an extra set of hands. The last ones are trusted advisors who help you every step of the way and if they are truly capable—which they usually are—with experience and expertise, they can really make a difference with the knowledge and insights that they have.

The Importance of Leadership in Maintenance with Richard Rierson

This episode is about the leadership that is the very backbone of the successful organizations that perform exceptionally every year and get better and better with time under the experience of the leadership they have. But was it the same from the beginning? No, it wasn’t. Not every leadership is perfect right from the start. There are a lot of phases through which they get and they fail sometimes too but what they don’t do is look weak in front of the people whose entire lives depend on them. The successful leaders get wiser by the time by learning from their mistakes. But is there some sort of special criteria for being a leader? Technically yes but in general terms, every other person can be a leader if he believes so. He just needs to understand what the true meaning of leadership is.

RCM Reengineered with James Reyes-Picknell & Jesus Sifonte

In this episode, the guests, James Reyes-Picknell and Jesus Sifonte talk about the RCM Reengineered that they have also explained in their book—to be launched on 20th April— with a lot of practical approaches as well. The RCM Reengineered is based on the original RCM technique to avoid and manage failures occurring during the asset management process, but it optimizes a lot of factors with a broad range of criticality measures and problems that come along with it. The RCM has been around for a long time and was developed to handle the safety issues in flights but RCM Reengineered focuses on the failures that are science-based and then it provides you with the exact solutions that must be implemented to achieve long-term and sustainable reliability operation depending upon the type of the industry.
