Spare Parts Optimization with Rob Kalwarowsky

Today, we’re welcoming Rob Kalwarowsky from Rob’s Reliability project. He’s currently an asset manager at Enbridge, handling their mechanical assets. Rob was previously a reliability consultant for five years, as well as a reliability engineer at Teck Resources. He’s been on a few of our previous podcasts.

But today, he’s helping us look into aspects of spare parts optimization such as:

  • What spare parts optimization is
  • The data necessary to help with optimization
  • The available approaches and formulas to calculate it
  • How often should you review your optimization process

… and so much more!

The Importance of Storeroom and Spare Parts with John Ross

Storing the right parts in your storeroom at the right time and in the right quantity is always effective. Storerooms are very important to a company’s survival in the long run so they should be managed at the core competency level of our businesses. The fact is that there is no way your maintenance and reliability operation is going to be successful without an effective spare parts management strategy and well-maintained storeroom. Not every organization is has a good storeroom and there can be a different number of reasons for that. They may be good at other things and they don’t pay attention to spare parts because they have a limited budget or just don’t value it that much.

What a Plant Consists of with Scott Kelley

In today’s episode, the guest Scott Kelley tells the audience about the importance of a plant in the asset management model. The plant cell is not just limited to the physical assets of the organization but it also includes the methods, risk evaluation, and mitigation strategies which you need to take care of to keep your plant performing at its best. The physical assets, facilities, and the equipment that you are using play a critical role when you need your plant to be working successfully. To accomplish this, you will need an asset management plan which should answer the following questions; what to maintain? How to maintain? When to maintain? Why maintain? Who will maintain? How and where to document the information? What is the cost involved? What are the consequences of non-maintenance? Now there are some facets that need to be kept in mind while planning for the asset management especially your plant.

Managing Spare Parts: A Discussion with Fred Schenkelberg

This episode of the weekly podcast gives a detailed insight about spare parts. First of all, a technician should know whether to repair the equipment or replace it. For this, he needs to have some failure data to help him improve his handling strategy. Next question here is that which spare parts do we need to stock? The answer for this can be obtained on the basis of analysis mechanisms such as Failure mode and Effects Analysis or data collected through other reliability measures.
