A comparison of a measuring device with a known standard. It is a set of operations that establish, under specified conditions, the relationship between a measuring device (observations of the response variable) and a traceable standard of known reference value and uncertainty (reference state). Calibration may also include steps to detect, correlate, report, or eliminate by adjustment any discrepancy in the accuracy of the measuring device being compared.

Appraisal cost
The cost of ensuring an organization conforms to customers’ quality requirements. Includes the costs of incoming inspection and test, in-process inspection and test, final inspection and test, document review, balancing (review of internal accounts to assure consistency), product quality audits, maintenance and calibration of test equipment, inspection and test materials and services, inspection and testing of materials and parts.
Calibration Interval
A specified amount of time or set of conditions between calibrations during which the calibration parameters of a measuring device are considered valid.
