The non-straight-line behavior between one or more factors and the response, usually expressed in mathematical terms involving the square or cube of a factor. Also defined as a departed from a straight line between the response and predictor variables.

Composite design
In designed experiments it is a design created to fit second order response surfaces in order to evaluate curvature. The design is constructed by adding further specific treatments to those in a 2n factorial or its fraction.
