The set of activities using statistical techniques to reduce variation, increase knowledge of the process, and direct the process in a desired manner. SPC is often associated with control charting and provides a means to identify and minimize unwanted process variation and maintain process stability.

Common cause
The source of natural variation affecting all the individual item characteristic output values. In SPC it appears as part of the random process variation.
Continuous improvement
A recurring activity that enhances performance. Example activities include: statistical process control (SPC), Fishbone (Ishikawa) diagrams, designed experiments (DOE), etc.
CUSUM chart
A plot of the cumulative deviation from a target; a type of statistical process control (SPC) chart.
Exponentially weighted moving average chart
A statistical process control chart using information exponentially weighted from past observations.
