Ultrasound is an effective technology that can be used for a few different purposes, not only condition monitoring. Here are my thoughts on the top uses:
- Electrical Inspections – Using ultrasound on electrical equipment is a great application, you can use it on electrical panels, before opening them, to increase the safety of your electrical inspections. Ultrasound can also be used on switchgear, substations, power cables and more.
- Acoustic Lubrication – I’ve discussed ultrasonic lubrication on the podcast before with Sean Miller. Ultrasound lets you put the right amount of grease in at the right time.
- Compressed Air Leak Detection – An easy, huge potential win with ultrasound comes from compressed air leak detection. If you missed it, Ricky Smith recommended it on this podcast as a low hanging fruit activity to get your culture rolling in the right direction.
- Steam Trap Inspections. Failed steam traps can waste energy in your plant. Using ultrasound to inspect your steam traps is a great way to reduce your energy consumption. I spoke about it with Doug Waetjen on this podcast.
Do you use ultrasound at your facility?
