The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award recognizes U.S. organizations in the business, health care, education, and nonprofit sectors for performance excellence. The Baldrige Award is the only formal recognition of the performance excellence of both public and private U.S. organizations given by the President of the United States. It is administered by the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, which is based at and managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Nondestructive ways to verify the operation and functions of a circuit; usually done multiple times "on the fly" at either startup or field usage stage. BIT is an integral capability of the mission equipment, which provides an onboard, automated test capability, consisting of software or hardware (or both) components, to detect, diagnose, or isolate product (system) failures. The fault detection and, possibly, isolation capability is used for periodic or continuous monitoring of a system's operational health, and for observation and, possibly, diagnosis as a prelude to maintenance action.

The process of decisions and actions based on the estimated health of an item using health monitoring and the expected future use of and stress on the item. Actions may include no changes, repair, replace, re-allocate resources, prioritize function, or alter system goals.

The active measurements and observations of an item for the purpose of estimating the item’s health status.

The integrated and comprehensive analysis, design, assessment of requirements, concepts, and resources for system manpower, personnel, training, safety and occupational health, habitability, personnel survivability, and human factors engineering.
