Lesson 3 – Reliability Metrics/Statistics

Module 2 Probability & Reliability Statistics

Lesson M02-03

Duration: 34 minutes

We use reliability metrics to set quantitative targets and to estimate performance against those targets.  In this lesson, we define the most common reliability metrics/statistics.  We also relate them to the probability density function which describes the time-to-failure data.

Lesson 2 – Conditional Probability, Independent Events, & Exercises

Module 2 Probability & Reliability Statistics

Lesson M02-02

Duration: 32 minutes

While conditional probability is not necessarily that intuitive, it plays a role in various reliability applications such as warranty forecasting, reliability prediction with burn-in, and repairable systems analysis.  This lesson introduces conditional probability as well as independent events.

Lesson 1 – Probability Basics

Module 2 Probability & Reliability Statistics

Lesson M02-01

Duration: 9 minutes

Since Reliability is a probability, we should understand some basic probability ideas.  Here we review basic probability concepts which will be important for applications later in the course.

Lesson 6 – Establishing Product Reliability Goals

Module 1 Reliability Concepts and Reliability Data

Lesson M01-06

Duration: 23 minutes

Establishing reliability goals is the first step in achieving the level of desired reliability performance.  We discuss the important elements of a reliability goal / target.  We also discuss factors that typically influence the reliability goal itself.

Lesson 3 – Types of Reliability Data and Unique Aspects

Module 1 Reliability Concepts and Reliability Data

Lesson M01-03

Duration: 17 minutes

The type of data we collect affects how much data we need, and the methods used to analyze it.  In this lesson, we explore different types and sources of reliability data, classifications of analyses, and challenging/unique aspects of reliability analyses.

Lesson 2 – Defining Reliability

Module 1 Reliability Concepts and Reliability Data

Lesson M01-02

Duration: 16 minutes

The common definition of reliability has several aspects that require a bit of explanation to apply to specific products.  In this lesson, we explore the nuances of defining reliability and distinguish quality from reliability.

Lesson 1 – Why Reliability and Typical Questions

Module 1 Reliability Concepts and Reliability Data

Lesson M01-01

Duration: 17 minutes

Intense global competition and increasing customer expectations have increased the pressure on manufacturers to produce high-quality and reliable products. Improving reliability is a key element of the larger overall objective of improving product quality.

Survival of any manufacturer today is dependent on its ability to produce reliable products. Although a primary objective of reliability analysis is to improve product reliability, there are many possible reasons for collecting and analyzing reliability data.

Several examples are the following:

  • Assessing product reliability in the field
  • Predicting product warranty costs
  • Assessing the effect of a proposed design change
  • Demonstrating product reliability to customers or government agencies
  • Improving reliability through the use of laboratory experiments
  • Providing risk assessment for safety-critical systems
