Frank Sun, Engineer
Fred interviews Frank Sun an engineer with a wealth of experience and talent. Besides working full time, he has two books 40+ technical papers, produces a Mandarin language webinar program, and volunteers in leadership positions with professional societies.
Coming with extensive education and training in electro-mechanical and reliability engineering and many years of academia and industry working experience, Dr. Sun is a highly respected reliability expert in the field. His expertise and interests cover wide range of areas of both theoretical and practical applications of quality and reliability disciplines including:
quality and reliability education and training; reliability modeling and statistical risk assessment; product quality and reliability spec determination; design for reliability (DFR); reliability test procedure development and DOE planning; accelerated life test design and quantification (physics-based stress-life modeling, acceleration factor estimation, and reliability projection); parametric reliability testing and quantification; burn-in and ESS quantification and optimization; quality improvement through 6-Sigma; reliability-maintainability evaluation, preventive maintenance scheduling and spare parts provisioning for both components and systems.
Dr. Sun has many years of teaching experience on Reliability Engineering in both academia and industries. He published three books and near 40 scientific papers in various areas of reliability, maintainability and quality engineering. He also co-authored or contributed to another five books in Reliability and Maintainability Engineering. His articles in HDD reliability are extensively quoted. His tutorial on Reliability Burn-In and ESS based on his two books won the A. O. Plait Best Tutorial Award at 2013 RAMS, the most prestigious international conference in reliability.
In this episode, Fred and Frank discuss:
- How Frank got started in reliability engineering, teaching and publishing
- Dealing with fault reporting and analysis given there are many possible root causes
- His work producing a webinar series and his work in with professional societies
