Can MTBF be Used for Software Reliability
Abstract
Adam and Chris Stapelmann discussing metrics for reliability software.
Key Points
Join Adam and Chris as they discuss if reliability metrics like MTBF may be used for software.
Topics include:
- With mechanical, electrical or software is there a place where MTBF is the best metric?
- Software reliability is evaluated by characterising the processes it was created with. The metrics are built into the process evaluations per industry standards.
- A focus on the integration phase with electro-mechanical hardware is key. The case conditions that are spec’d in the development process may not match that actual application due to changes or oversight.

Dave Robson says
I don’t think MTBF is suitable for much other than comparison of the exactly the same non-repairable product under exactly the conditions, i.e. MTTF
NHPP works for software.
