Electronics in Today’s Vehicles
Abstract
Kirk and Fred discussed a recent search topic on electronics reliability when we found an article on the durability of automotive electronics.
Key Points
Join Kirk and Fred as they discuss automotive reliability and how many failure causes stem from variations in the long vertical supply chain in manufacturing.
Topics include:
- Statistical Process Control (SPC) has been a key tool to monitor and reduce manufacturing variations, but for many companies, it was not taken seriously.
- Electronics in automobiles has increased dramatically with electric vehicles (EV), and therefore electronics failures are becoming more of an issue in the automotive industry as it moves from being a minor issue of entertainment console failures to the inability to operate the vehicle.
- As we move to autonomous vehicles, the reliability of the guidance and operation of the vehicle becomes more of a critical safety issue, too, although we have trusted many of the safety functions to computer control, as we do with automatic skid control when we hit the brakes.
- For many consumers, the reason to buy a new car is technological safety improvements, such as backup cameras, proximity warning sensors, and, in the near future, fully self-driving cars that we will all appreciate as we age out of driving ourselves.
