Then, the selection of the right tools for a specific problem goes a long way. You should know what kind of tools are you using? What kind of problem you are dealing with? What kind of process you have in place? These are the questions that help you find the answers to a lot of problems that would be ignored otherwise. Experimenting in the lab and applying your knowledge I the field gives you insights that drive best practices but doing research, reading books on reliability and engineering also help you stay up-to-date on the latest technology, tools, and practices that are out there.
You just need to get started somewhere and then you can get better at it by applying that knowledge in different ways. You should be able to communicate that knowledge with people and also know how to convince them through a good presentation or compelling, logical explanation. There are plenty of platforms that can help you help you catch up with the latest trends and advancements in the industry but having a good book by your side always gives you an edge. Consultants can help you better if you have a starting point for them and make improvements from there.
