Why should I learn about RCM?

Have you ever tried to implement any asset improvement activity but it didn’t go so well?  Couldn’t rally the troops?  Couldn’t get the kind of management buy-in that you really needed to get things off the ground?  If so, you’re not alone.

I’ve read too many articles describing that up to 70% of asset improvement initiatives fail.  And I think it’s because a lot of people don’t have a basic understanding of maintenance and reliability principles.  So they don’t understand why “change” needs to take place.

And Now to the Biggest IT Outage … Ever!

It is no small irony that a software application that is designed to protect IT systems from malicious actors was behind the biggest IT outage in the history of computers. A company called Crowdstrike provides a ‘Falcon Sensor’ product that is intended to scan computers that use Microsoft operating systems for vulnerabilities. And this product is deployed so deeply into its host operating systems that it has access to the ‘kernel,’ which is the program that runs the basic code that links applications to the computer hardware (like memory, central processing unit and other devices). Unfortunately a Falcon Sensor update that Crowdstrike sent to its customers had a bug that was not picked up by its own validation programs (because it too had a bug). And unfortunately, it accesses a ‘forbidden’ part of the memory that causes the infamous BSOD or ‘blue screen of death.’ So airlines, hospitals, banks, hotels and lots of other companies simply couldn’t operate.

Calculating System Availability

How to Properly Calculate System Availability

Recently received a request for my opinion concerning the calculation of system availability using the classic formula

$$ \displaystyle \large A=\frac{MTBF}{MTBF+MTTR}$$

The work is to create a set of goals for various suppliers and contractors to achieve. The calculation values derive from vendor data sheets and available information concerning MTBF and MTTR. The project is in the design phase; thus, they do not have working systems available to measure actual availability.

 Plant and equipment failures are business process failures. Plant stoppages and breakdowns result from failure-causing practices built into business processes and from leaving the right reliability practices out of them. Processes may superficially look okay because they have documentation, charts and records, but if you suffer a steady stream of failures, problems, and rework, then your processes contain unforeseen ‘traps’ into which your people and equipment regularly fall. Failure was not intended when your processes were chosen and designed, but failure is what happens when they are used.

Maintenance Tactics: A Practical Guide to Balancing Cost, Reliability, and Risk

In most industries we ideally want the lowest-cost maintenance strategy, one that balances risk of unplanned vs planned maintenance costs to a lifetime minimum.

This is what we’ve calculated in a previous article HERE, and this article/exercise is a follow-on from this.

The downside of using this method is that it may select a maintenance interval where the inherent reliability of the component at changeout time is less than is required for operational reasons, or that we’re not getting the best “increase in reliability vs marginal cost” value. [Read more…]

How many times have we heard that we must tolerate poor process performance because it’s “the nature of the beast” or its excess variability is considered “normal”? How much does financial performance suffer due to allowances for alarming levels of scrap, low yields, or losses considered “best practice” for the industry? Improving these situations requires a great team, supportive management, and cooperative suppliers. Beyond the support, operations and quality leaders must know a systematic method of problem-solving and have access to statistical tools to drive the data through to a solution.

The Future of Production is Endless Risk Free Operation

 The world needs plant and equipment that are reliable and fault-free for decades. Yet Maintenance can only keep machinery working by replacing broken and at risk parts. Even industrial asset management only aims to lower the cost of plant and equipment ownership. Neither methodology has the capability to deliver what mankind needs in future. Before the end of this century both disciplines will die-out because intelligent production machines will be made that are completely reliable and maintenance-free for their entire lifetimes.

“Time and tide wait for no man”.  King Canute demonstrated that the ebb and flow of the tide are inevitable and even a king has no control over them.  Time, perhaps our most precious resource, is also no exception.  Who hasn’t regretted not doing something because there wasn’t enough time, or time ran out as we wasted too much time deciding to do something and the opportunity slipped through our fingers? 

On the other hand, how often do we regret having made a hurried decision and have had to live with dire consequences which, in hindsight could well have been avoided if we’d had more time or rather, made better use of the time available.

In the previous article in this series, we discussed the difference between Agile and business agility and how Agile 2 addresses some of the omissions and failings of traditional Agile.  Both Agile and Agile 2 focus on accelerating digital development; however, the benefits of any Agile approach can be obviated if it is not implemented within an agile management structure.  Addressing execution issues, as Agile 2 does, will not be sufficient by itself to get you where you need to go.

A Conversation with Indium’s Rick Short about Education-Based Marketing

We’re the best, we’re number one, we’re better than them, we’ve won more awards than our competitors, we’ve all seen those ads. While this form of advertising isn’t unique, when’s the last time it caused you to buy a product based on the ad. I think we all know that answer.

There was a time when we relied heavily on print advertising to determine what products were available and from whom. The two primary methods to gain product awareness were print advertising and trade shows. While advertising and trade shows still exist, they are no longer the primary method of product awareness.

31 years ago, beginning on April 30, 1993, all of that began to change. What happened on April 30, 1993? Public access to the Internet was born.

Over the past 31 years, Internet technology propelled us into an age of self discovery. The older generation accuses the younger generation of always having their face in a screen. While that may be true, it’s not always TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, or Snapchat. People today, particularly younger people, research products, technologies, and a host of other things online. Consumers today are far more educated on the products they wish to purchase them at any time in history.

In what I find to be an exceptional irony, much of the industry responsible for building the technology behind Internet connectivity continues to advertise their products in a pre-Internet style.

You may ask, what does this have to do with reliability? Building reliable products requires a net sum of a vast amount of best practices. One of those practices is insuring the right products, procedures, specifications, designs, and so many other factors are implemented.

This goal cannot be accomplished by just reading advertisements from sellers. Frequently, engineers struggle to solve problems without a complete knowledge of the root cause of the problem. Particularly today, with so many in-house subject matter experts retiring, advertisements boasting the number of customers, time and business, and where they place in the hierarchy of competitive products do not assist the engineer and understanding the root cause of a potential problem, and certainly not the solution.

Over the past several years, several companies in our industry have begun to change their advertising strategies from transactional, to transformational. That is to say they help to connect problems to solutions, more than merely hyping products.

My guest today fully understands the value and effectiveness of what I like to call “Conscious Marketing “.
