Origins of Maintenance in the Royal Navy, 1509-1628

1546 – Establishing the Royal Navy

In the 15th century, the English Royal Navy did not exist as a standing force. When needed, the Royal Navy was temporarily assembled using rented merchant ships. Henry VIII expanded England’s fleet from a handful of small converted merchant ships to a force of 30 purpose-built warships. He established government dockyards, the Admiralty, and the Navy Board. Starting in 1546, the Navy Board was a permanent part of the government. 

Warships owned by the government had no other purpose and suddenly gave the government a new kind of asset to manage.

Get Clarity on Goals with a Continuum

We worked on a project with our team and met our goal!
Except, management isn’t happy – they expected something else.

Seeing if we have alignment on goals is easy if we gather the team and stakeholders for 10 minutes and use a continuum.

There are certain categories that goals will fall within. A continuum is a way we can list those categories, get alignment, and gain an understanding of how ‘big’ of a project this is going to be. We get clarity on our goals.

Is it hard? Not at all. Is it eye-opening? Sometimes. It can help us move forward with a discussion to help ensure we’re all successful.

About 13 years ago, I began a reliability journey at a large paper mill. At that time, the mill was pretty reactive and I was naïve enough to think I was going to single handedly turn it around. While I thought I had all the answers and was going to teach the mill a thing or two about reliability, it ended up teaching me a hell of a lot more.

Red Flags? They are All Red Flags

“That’s a Red Flag!” goes the cry from some when something amiss is recognised.  However, many project participants don’t realise that their Project sails through a sea of flags and that, on some occasion, the flags can be read as red by somebody at some time.

In a similar nautical vein the Roman writer Ovid once poetized “The man who has experienced shipwreck shudders even at a calm sea“.  While written some 2,000 years ago it is as true today as it ever was and a reminder to us all that risks lurk everywhere.  Some risks may not be identified, let alone assessed and may go unnoticed until they strike.  We need to be aware and vigilant and avoid a complacent belief that a risk register is the be all and end all.

Email is 50 this year…its Golden Anniversary!  It ‘happened’ in 1971 when Ray Tomlinson, the late computer engineer and first user, sent a transmission to himself utilising two independent computers…a revolutionary innovation at the time.  The content of that primordial message is long forgotten and the same may also be the fate of many of the ~300 billion emails that are sent almost every day by the estimated 4 billion users around the world.  Communication is said to bring us together or set us apart and email is no different.

A Conversation about ESD Flooring with Thomas Ricciardelli

Modern electronics assembly has seen so many changes over the years. In today’s era of IOT, the electrification of vehicles, the explosion in the use of bottom terminated components, the increasing implementation of electronics into harsh environments have all contributed to the increasing complexity and difficulty of building electronics. While so much has changed, there are some things that have remained the same. 

One such thing is the need for ESD control. There always was and continues to be the challenge of protecting components from the dangers of static electricity. My guest today is Thomas Ricciardelli, Founder and CEO of SelecTech, a manufacturer of ESD flooring for the electronics assembly industry.

Tom is also the Chairman of the Flooring Committee of the EOS/ESD Association. Tom earned a Masters in Chemical Engineering from MIT and an MBA from the MIT Slone School of Management and today, he’s my guest on the podcast.

Iterative software development approaches have been around since the 1950s but many mark the beginning of what is commonly thought of as Agile as the creation of the Agile Manifesto, a document written by a number of software engineers in 2001, which contains 12 principles that serve as guidelines to how software projects should be conducted.  Since then, professional services and product organizations have taken Agile and bent and twisted it into proprietary commercial forms for their own gain.
