How to Create an Effective Corporate Reliability Group with Scott Kelley
Most of the organization in the maintenance and reliability industry don’t have a consistent improvement in the plant production or they are not making progress at the rate they should after investing that many resources they put in the sites. The problem occurs when you don’t have an effective corporate reliability group and that is a structured unit that is actively involved in visiting your sites, reviewing your business processes, and then helping you achieve your organization’s goals by doing everything that needs to be done. They are the ones who help you see your vision for your organization see clearly.
Now, how can be these groups be more effective at the sites? Well, this is a very tricky part because most of the sites don’t want anyone else telling them how to run the site they have been running for years. When the corporate reliability groups arrive there, they just don’t talk to them or work with them as they should. That’s why it is very important to have that kind of communication with the on-site leaders because they are the ones who can get everyone talk to you about what’s right and wrong with the site.
So, it is very important to have that buy-in when the corporate group visits a site and then they will listen to what you have to say and they will implement it as well. All both sides need is to create a communication bridge where both parties can listen to each other and work towards making the site better. When both sides have the buy-in, it becomes easier to get them to talk about their problems. A corporate reliability group can help the sites in so many ways and because they are the people who are hand-picked from within the organization and from other organizations with years of experience.
They can really help you with regulatory problems by making the processes standardized and provide you with the best practices that are effectively being used in the world. They will help you see things in a better light and perform the activities that you already performing in much better and effective ways. A corporate reliability group shouldn’t be perceived as a threat to the jobs of the people but as a unit who will help them customize the implementation process within each of the sites and help utilize the site data in the right way.
They basically provide you the roadmap to achieve your target. Even the organizations should be consulting with the sites while developing those models, devising the policies and procedures, and standardizing procedures because that is the best way to make it work. The organization needs to be aware of the end goal of creating a reliability group and they need to work with the site representatives to get the trust and make them comfortable. When you do these things, you can make the sites understand how to be cost-effective and more successful.
