Fundamentals of Field Data Analysis
podcast episode
Once a product is launched, it’s time to understand its performance. The design is done, and the assembly process is working. Now we can focus on answering the question: is the product hitting reliability targets or not?
Thus, we do field data analysis.
The basic process is to gather data, clean the data as best we can, conduct some form of analysis, and determine if the product meets reliability targets. Are the reliability estimates accurate? How can we make better estimates next time? Are all the failure mechanisms expected, or are we surprised by previous unknown failure mechanisms?
The analysis is more than a statistical exercise. It relies on a fundamental understanding of the product, desired business objectives, failure analysis, customer perceptions of failure, and common sense. Let’s talk about what you should be doing as you monitor the reliability performance of your product after launch.
