On last week’s webinar (released tomorrow on the Rob’s Reliability Project podcast feed), we spoke about using metrics & KPIs to understand where your company is on their maintenance & reliability journey. Metrics and KPIs are helpful but often, I see them used to discipline, to incent and, in the worst cases, to fire people.
This creates a culture of fear and a lack of trust.
We, as leaders, need to create cultures of trust and psychological safety. When we have our people looking over their shoulders waiting for the ax to fall or we create a culture of metric manipulation (I’m sure we’ve all seen unreported safety incidents!), we not only lose our best people but we lose the best from our people.
I talk more in depth about Fear-Based Leadership on this podcast.
